After Independence Day weekend, Disney imposed blackout restrictions on top passholders, wiped the waterways from its digital map, kicked off site clearing for the park’s largest expansion.

"Piston Peak is inspired by the Rocky Mountain area and the history and iconic sights of the American Frontier and its national parks," according to the official Disney Parks Blog.

Disney announced that Piston Peak National Park will be the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history, continuing the stories and themes that have always run through Frontierland and Liberty Square.

Overview

  • Rivers of America, the Liberty Square Riverboat and Tom Sawyer Island closed permanently on July 6–7, ending attractions that first opened between 1971 and 1973.
  • Disney removed the rivers and island from the My Disney Experience app overnight, effectively erasing them from digital park maps ahead of construction.
  • Pirate Pass and Pixie Dust Annual Passholders were blocked out over the Fourth of July weekend, limiting guest attendance during the final operating days.
  • The Walt Disney World Railroad grand circle tour has been truncated as construction begins on Piston Peak National Park staging areas.
  • The closures mark the launch of Magic Kingdom’s largest expansion in history and underscore Disney’s shift toward IP-driven lands with two new Cars-themed rides.
