Disney Sues DeSantis-Appointed Board for Withholding Public Records

The lawsuit is the latest development in an ongoing feud sparked by Disney's opposition to Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' law.

  • Disney has filed a lawsuit against the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD), a board appointed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, accusing it of failing to release documents and preserve public records as required by state law.
  • The lawsuit alleges that the CFTOD has been slow in fulfilling its public records duties, failing to respond completely to a request made by Disney seven months ago.
  • Disney, DeSantis, and the DeSantis-appointed board are already involved in two other lawsuits battling for control of the government.
  • The feud between DeSantis and Disney began last year when the company publicly opposed Florida's so-called 'Don't Say Gay' law, which bans classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades.
  • Since the CFTOD was taken over in February, around 50 out of about 370 employees have left, raising concerns about the loss of decades of institutional knowledge and a reputation for a well-run government.
