Disney Sets Jimmy Kimmel Live Return as Sinclair Stations Plan to Preempt Broadcast

The decision follows days of talks after his suspension over remarks about the Charlie Kirk case.

Overview

  • ABC said the late-night show will resume on Tuesday, a week after it was pulled from the schedule on September 17.
  • Disney cited “deep conversations” with Kimmel in announcing the return following his comments about the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s killing.
  • Sinclair, which controls roughly 38–39 ABC affiliates including Washington, D.C.’s WJLA, said it will preempt the program and air news instead while talks with ABC continue.
  • Nexstar has not committed to carrying the show as it monitors the situation, and together Nexstar and Sinclair account for about one quarter of ABC’s U.S. household reach.
  • The clash intensified First Amendment concerns after FCC commissioner Brendan Carr warned of potential regulatory action, as more than 400 Hollywood figures backed Kimmel in an ACLU-organized letter, while Sinclair pressed for an apology and a donation before any reinstatement on its stations.
