Overview

  • The contested scene shows a live rat being submerged in oxygen-rich liquid to illustrate underwater breathing and was shot under expert supervision.
  • The RSPCA first called for its removal from Disney+ in May and succeeded when the film was taken off the UK service on June 17.
  • British theatrical and home-video editions have long excluded the scene but it resurfaced in the streaming version until this week.
  • James Cameron declined to excise the sequence from a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition, preventing its UK release.
  • The film remains available on Disney+ in the United States and the RSPCA has said it would support its return if the scene is permanently cut.
