Disney Invests $1 Billion in OpenAI, Licensing 200+ Characters to Sora and ChatGPT

User features are slated for early 2026 under a three-year deal with added safety limits that keep actor likenesses off-limits.

Overview

  • The partnership authorizes Sora and ChatGPT Images to generate short videos and images using a curated catalog of more than 200 Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars characters, plus costumes, vehicles and iconic environments.
  • Disney will become a major OpenAI API customer to build new products and Disney+ experiences, with ChatGPT deployed internally for employees.
  • A curated selection of fan-generated Sora videos could be showcased on Disney+, with initial user-facing features expected in early 2026.
  • The license excludes human faces and voices, and OpenAI pledged strengthened safety standards, age policies and controls to prevent illegal or harmful content and to protect rights holders.
  • The three-year agreement includes warrants allowing Disney to purchase additional OpenAI equity, remains subject to corporate and regulatory approvals, and Disney has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Google alleging large-scale copyright infringement.
