Disney Invests $1 Billion in OpenAI, Licensing 200+ Characters for Sora and ChatGPT

The three-year pact opens a licensed path for fan-made clips, with curated selections planned for Disney+ in early 2026.

Overview

  • OpenAI’s Sora and ChatGPT Images will be permitted to generate short videos and images using characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars, with assets such as costumes, props, vehicles and environments included.
  • The agreement excludes performers’ likenesses and voices, and Disney and OpenAI say safety and rights protections will govern use; Bob Iger told CNBC videos will be capped at 30 seconds and not used for longer-form productions.
  • Disney will become a major OpenAI customer, deploy ChatGPT internally, and use OpenAI’s models to build new products and experiences for services including Disney+, while also receiving warrants to purchase additional OpenAI equity.
  • The licensed features are expected to launch in early 2026, and a selection of user-created Sora videos may be curated for streaming on Disney+.
  • The deal marks a shift toward negotiated licensing as unions and industry groups voice concerns over creator rights, while Disney keeps up separate legal pressure on other AI firms, including a cease-and-desist to Google and suits against Midjourney.
