Disney Invests $1 Billion in OpenAI, Licenses 200+ Characters to Sora and ChatGPT Images

The three-year pact introduces licensed AI creation under guardrails that bar actor likenesses or voices, with initial features slated for early 2026.

Overview

  • The agreement lets Sora and ChatGPT Images generate short videos and images using more than 200 characters across Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars.
  • The license covers stylized characters as well as costumes, vehicles and iconic environments, excludes actor faces or voices, and includes age checks and other safety controls.
  • Disney will become a principal customer of OpenAI’s APIs and will deploy ChatGPT internally to build tools and new experiences for Disney+.
  • A curated selection of user-created Sora videos could appear on Disney+, with feature rollouts expected to begin in early 2026.
