The new platform aims to consolidate sports streaming for cord-nevers, pending regulatory approval.

In a significant move to reshape the sports streaming landscape, three major media conglomerates—Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery—have announced the name of their joint venture: Venu Sports. This new service aims to consolidate a vast array of live sports content into a single platform, targeting the 60 million U.S. households that do not subscribe to traditional cable or satellite TV.

"We are excited to officially introduce Venu Sports, a brand that we feel captures the spirit of an all-new streaming home where sports fans outside of the traditional pay TV ecosystem can experience an incredible collection of live sports, all in one place," said Pete Distad, CEO of Venu Sports and a former Apple executive, in a press release.

The service, set to launch in the fall of 2024, will offer a comprehensive lineup of sports programming from ESPN, ABC, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery's TNT, TBS, and truTV. This includes coverage of major leagues such as the NFL, NHL, NBA, and Major League Baseball. The exact pricing has not been disclosed, but it is expected to be around $50 per month, which is lower than the typical pay TV subscription.

The creation of Venu Sports is a strategic response to the increasing fragmentation and cost of sports broadcasting rights. By pooling their resources, Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery aim to provide a more streamlined and cost-effective option for sports fans. This move also positions the traditional media companies to better compete with tech giants like Netflix and Amazon, which have been aggressively acquiring sports broadcasting rights.

Netflix recently announced it had secured the rights to two NFL Christmas games in 2024, with plans to broadcast at least one game in the following two seasons. Amazon's Prime Video is also expected to secure a significant package of NBA games in the league's next media rights deal. These developments underscore the growing competition in the sports streaming market.

However, the launch of Venu Sports is not without its challenges. The joint venture is subject to regulatory approval and the finalization of definitive agreements among the parties involved. The Justice Department is reportedly reviewing the venture for potential anticompetitive implications. Additionally, streaming TV provider Fubo has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block the launch, alleging that the venture violates antitrust laws.

Despite these hurdles, the partners are optimistic about the future of Venu Sports. The service will be available directly to consumers via a new app, with the option to bundle it with other streaming services like Disney+, Hulu, or Max. The branding of Venu Sports, developed in partnership with global design and advertising firm R/GA, draws inspiration from the various venues where live sports take place, such as stadiums, arenas, and ballparks.

The announcement of Venu Sports comes at a time when the streaming industry is undergoing significant changes. Traditional cable TV is losing subscribers at an accelerating rate, while streaming services are increasingly bundling content in ways that resemble the old cable model. This re-bundling trend is evident in the recent moves by Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery to consolidate their sports offerings.

As the landscape of sports broadcasting continues to evolve, Venu Sports represents a bold attempt to simplify and enhance the viewing experience for sports fans. By offering a one-stop platform for a wide range of live sports, the service aims to attract a new generation of viewers who have never subscribed to traditional pay TV.

In the words of Pete Distad, "As preparations for the platform continue to accelerate, we are singularly focused on delivering a best-in-class product for our target audience, built from the ground up using the latest technologies to engage and entertain discerning sports fans wanting one-stop access to live games."

The success of Venu Sports will depend on its ability to navigate regulatory challenges, secure favorable licensing terms, and deliver a compelling user experience. If it can achieve these goals, Venu Sports could become a major player in the increasingly competitive world of sports streaming.
