Disney Faces Reported 1.7 Million Streaming Cancellations as Shareholders Press for Kimmel Records

Investors now question whether political pressure influenced Disney’s suspension decision.

Overview

  • Independent journalist Marisa Kabas reports Disney logged more than 1.7 million paid cancellations across Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN during Sept. 17–23, a level she says is 436% above typical churn, which Disney has not confirmed.
  • Disney reinstated Jimmy Kimmel Live after what it called “thoughtful conversations,” following FCC Chair Brendan Carr’s public threats and days of preemptions by major ABC affiliate owners.
  • Nexstar and Sinclair, which initially pulled the show in several markets, ended their boycott by Friday, with local ABC stations now carrying Kimmel’s program again.
  • Kimmel’s return drew an estimated 6.3 million viewers on Tuesday before falling to roughly 2.3 million by Thursday, compared with a recent average near 1.77 million.
  • Shareholder groups including the AFT, AFL-CIO, and Reporters Without Borders demanded Disney’s internal records by a five‑business‑day deadline set Sept. 24 and warned of potential litigation over possible improper political or affiliate considerations.
