Discounters Cut Chocolate Santa Prices as Brands Take Different Paths

Falling cocoa costs could push down shelf prices or be absorbed as higher margins by manufacturers.

Overview

  • Aldi Nord and Lidl have reduced their 110 g private‑label chocolate Santas to €0.99, a drop of about 41% from €1.69 last year, according to a Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg price sample reported on Wednesday.
  • Lindt has published lower recommended retail prices for several Santa sizes on its website, for example cutting the 125 g UVP from €5.99 to €5.49 and the 200 g from €8.99 to €7.99.
  • Mid‑market brands show the opposite move in some cases, with Milka and Kinder raising prices on larger festive figures — for example moving certain items from €2.99 to €3.29.
  • The changes widen a clear premium versus discount gap: Lindt’s 125 g Santa now costs about €4.39 per 100 g while discounter options run around €0.90 per 100 g, making Lindt roughly five times more expensive per weight.
  • Cocoa prices have fallen or stabilized since their 2024 peak and consumer groups note cocoa is only about 4% of a branded chocolate’s retail cost, so the market will show whether retailers pass savings to shoppers through promotions or keep them as higher margins.
