Overview
- Discord began rolling out the system Wednesday and is automatically classifying most accounts into three groups: Adult (18+), Teen (13–17), or Unconfirmed.
- The company says its model uses account-level signals such as account age, servers and communities, activity levels, and connected games and does not read messages or calls to estimate age.
- Discord estimates more than 90% of users will not be asked to manually verify their age and added several non-biometric options for others, including credit-card checks routed via k-ID/Stripe, App Store or Play Store age ranges, Google Wallet passport passes, and AgeKey credentials.
- Accounts placed in the Teen or Unconfirmed groups receive default protections that limit profile visibility, send messages from non-friends to Message Requests, blur or block sensitive images, and block access to age-restricted servers.
- The rollout follows a February delay after community backlash and a reported 2025 vendor breach that exposed identity images; Discord says it has fully retired the manual-review vendor, published its vendor list and technical notes, and still limits the model’s availability in some regions such as the UK and Australia.
