- Discord is rolling out an automated system that places most accounts into Adult, Teen, or Unconfirmed groups using a machine-learning model trained on account signals such as servers, activity, and account age.
- The company says more than 90% of users will not be prompted for manual verification and that the model does not analyze message content or calls.
- When manual proof is required users can choose from several vendor-backed options including credit-card checks routed through k‑ID and Stripe, App Store or Play Store age data, Google Wallet passport verification in select countries, AgeKey credentials, a video selfie, or an ID scan.
- Accounts labeled Teen or Unconfirmed receive tighter protections such as blocked access to age-restricted channels, message requests from non-friends routed to a separate inbox, friend-request alerts, blurred sensitive images, and reduced profile visibility.
- Privacy and security concerns persist because some verification methods rely on third-party vendors and a prior vendor breach reportedly exposed verification photos and IDs for roughly 70,000 users, raising calls for greater vendor transparency and stronger safeguards.
