Dioceses Close Holy Doors on Dec. 28 as Vatican Sets Jan. 6 Finale

Local rites answer Pope Francis's call to let Catholics complete the Jubilee within their home dioceses.

Overview

  • The Diocese of Málaga will end its Holy Year on Sunday at the cathedral with the Holy Door closure and a 6 p.m. liturgy led by Bishop José Antonio Satué, followed by a Christmas flamenco recital.
  • Valladolid will mark the close with a 6 p.m. jubilee eucharist presided over by Archbishop Luis Argüello, after a year that included anti‑trafficking awareness workshops coordinated with religious congregations and Catholic charities.
  • Jujuy’s diocesan celebration centers on the Río Blanco sanctuary with a procession through the Holy Door and an 11 a.m. Mass led by Bishop Daniel Fernández, inviting families to bring nativity scenes for the “Jubileo de los Pesebres.”
  • Río Blanco served as Jujuy’s focal point throughout 2025 due to repairs at the cathedral, with the sanctuary completing two retreat dormitories and preparing four catechesis classrooms to expand formation space.
  • Rome has begun closing other Holy Doors, including at Santa Maria Maggiore on Dec. 25, ahead of Pope León XIV presiding over the sealing of St. Peter’s Holy Door on Jan. 6.
