Diocese of Portland Moves St. Dominic PreK–8 to Auburn Campus on Jan. 12, 2026

Church leaders cite stronger-than-expected enrollment as the reason for the midyear shift.

Overview

  • Students in preK through grade 8 will start classes on the Auburn campus Jan. 12, 2026, following a one-week extension of the Christmas break.
  • Bishop James Ruggieri said enrollment exceeded projections, particularly in the middle grades, leaving the Lewiston Holy Cross and Holy Family sites unable to meet demand.
  • The diocese is pursuing long-term leases, initially for athletic facilities, to support operations at the Auburn site and is studying a daycare for children 6 weeks to 3 years beginning next fall.
  • More than 50 students have withdrawn from the academy in response to recent changes, according to board member Susan Barton Young.
  • The Saint Dominic Regional High School Board says it filed 501(c)(3) paperwork and aims to relaunch an independent Catholic high school in fall 2026, targeting a site decision by next month and enrollment starting in January 2026.
