- A study published Sept. 9–10 analyzed about 11,000 UK Biobank participants who wore wrist light sensors for seven days and had cardiac MRI roughly three years later to compare near-darkness with exposure above 3 lux.
- Participants with nighttime exposure above 3 lux showed modest but consistent signs of cardiac remodeling, including a 2.4% greater left ventricular mass, 1.5% thicker wall and a 1.9% lower myocardial contraction fraction.
- The authors report a dose–response pattern and that shorter sleep explained about 24%–49% of the associations, but the work remains observational and cannot prove that night light causes the heart changes.
- Key measurement limits include a one-week wrist sensor (not eye-level or spectral data), a mainly White, middle-aged cohort, and no direct test of blue/LED light or long-term exposure patterns.
