Digvijaya Singh Hails BJP-RSS ‘Power of Organisation’ in Modi Throwback, Then Issues Clarification

BJP leaders touted the post as evidence of Congress discord.

Overview

  • Sharing a 1990s photo of Narendra Modi seated on the floor near L. K. Advani, Digvijaya Singh wrote that a grassroots worker rising to chief minister and prime minister showed the “power of the organisation.”
  • The image is widely reported to be from the 1996 swearing-in of Gujarat chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela.
  • Singh tagged Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and also PM Modi, and posted as the Congress Working Committee met in Delhi.
  • BJP figures seized on the post, with spokesperson C. R. Kesavan calling it a “truth bomb” and Pradip Bhandari saying “Congress vs Congress” was on display.
  • After backlash, Singh said he remains opposed to the RSS and Modi and that he praised organisational discipline only, with coverage noting no disciplinary action and recalling his Dec. 19 call for more decentralised functioning in Congress.
