Digital Foundry Says Switch 2 Resident Evil 4 Port Cuts Visuals and Sees Frame-Rate Drops

The group’s Oct. 15 technical review shows low internal render resolutions and removed effects that could affect play and signal technical limits for Switch 2 ports.

Overview

  • Digital Foundry’s Oct. 15 analysis measured the Switch 2 build’s internal render as about 520p docked and 360p handheld and found the game uses DLSS to upscale those low internal renders to the display resolution.
  • The Switch 2 version omits or reduces several graphical effects compared with the PS5 release, including some local light shadows, screen-space reflections, volumetric lighting, subsurface scattering, denser foliage, and less detail at distance.
  • Capcom’s Switch 2 build targets 60 frames per second but Digital Foundry documented dips into the 50s in busier zones and into the 40s during dense combat and some cutscenes, and suggested a locked 40 FPS mode could have given a steadier experience.
  • By contrast, Resident Evil 2 and 3—their remakes originally built for PS4—translate to Switch 2 with fewer visual compromises and a more consistent 60 FPS performance.
  • Because Resident Evil 4’s remake was developed for PS5, Digital Foundry notes the greater compromises on Switch 2 and the findings, published ahead of the Oct. 16 launch, could prompt players to expect post-launch patches or options focused on steadier frame rates and visual toggles.
