Diamantis Bribery Trial Opens in Bridgeport With Texts, Voicemails, First Witness

Prosecutors say the former school construction chief solicited cash from contractors in exchange for steering state-funded projects.

Overview

  • Prosecutors began by presenting texts, emails and voicemails they say document a cash-for-contracts scheme in the state’s school building program.
  • John Duffy, a former Acranom Masonry executive who has pleaded guilty, testified that he and owner Sal Monarca paid bribes to Konstantinos “Kosta” Diamantis and that Acranom secured work on projects including Hartford’s Weaver High School and Tolland’s Birch Grove Elementary.
  • Jurors saw messages referencing a “5 percent” take and heard a voicemail in which Diamantis pressed for immediate payment, citing bills and his daughter’s tuition and wedding.
  • The government alleged cash exchanges occurred at his home, in a Capitol Grille bathroom in Hartford, and at a Dunkin’ near a state office building.
  • Diamantis has pleaded not guilty to 22 counts including bribery, extortion, conspiracy and false statements, and his attorney Norm Pattis says he may testify and could call Gov. Ned Lamont.
