DHS Takes Sanctuary Jurisdictions List Offline and Keeps Designations in Use

DHS withdrew the list after sheriffs and local counties flagged errors; Secretary Kristi Noem says the designations still guide immigration enforcement.

Members of immigration advocacy groups react as the Los Angeles City Council votes to enact an ordinance prohibiting city resources from being used for immigration enforcement on November 19, 2024.

Overview

  • The Department of Homeland Security removed its online list of more than 500 jurisdictions labeled “sanctuary” on June 1 after criticism from the Sheriffs’ Association and local governments.
  • The tally was issued under President Trump’s April executive order targeting areas deemed uncooperative with federal immigration enforcement and threatening to withhold grants and contracts.
  • Secretary Kristi Noem told Fox News that despite disappearing from the website, the designations remain in use and original press materials stay available online.
  • Some listed communities, including Huntington Beach, Calif., and Shawano County, Wis., say they were wrongly identified and cite lawsuits or clerical errors.
  • Immigrant rights groups and several city leaders branded the list arbitrary and unconstitutional, warning it undermines trust between federal authorities and local law enforcement.
