The department replied to inquiries by pointing reporters to the First Amendment.

Overview

  • NOTUS identified the speechwriter as Eric Lendrum, whose LinkedIn lists a March 2025 start at DHS after brief Trump-era roles, by linking podcasts, social posts and bylines to his name.
  • A 2021 American Greatness post attributed to Lendrum likened conservatives’ treatment after January 6 to the Holocaust and slavery and praised Ashli Babbitt as “an actual hero.”
  • Podcast episodes quoted him calling Jan. 6 footage of lawmakers hiding “gratifying,” endorsing the “great replacement” theory, and arguing Europe “could use a far-right government.”
  • Posts and recordings attributed to him include explicit anti-trans rhetoric, with slurs, pledges to deadname people, and a call to “eradicate transgenderism.”
  • DHS provided only a First Amendment link in response to questions, Lendrum did not respond, and no personnel action has been reported; the Guardian also cited a 2023 X post from the same account appearing to encourage drivers to hit street protesters.
