DHS Says Los Angeles Immigration Arrests Top 5,000 Since June

Touted as a crackdown on violent offenders, the milestone is tempered by consular data showing many detainees have long U.S. roots.

Overview

  • DHS reports surpassing 5,000 arrests in the Los Angeles area since June, describing the campaign as removing criminal offenders from the streets.
  • The 5,000th detainee was identified as Gustavo Garcia-Miranda, a Mexican national and convicted drug trafficker who first entered the U.S. in 2008 and was arrested for illegal re-entry.
  • Officials highlighted cases involving murder and child sex abuse and noted detainees from Mexico, El Salvador, South Korea, Vietnam, China, and Eritrea.
  • The Mexican Consulate says it interviewed 641 detainees between June 6 and Aug. 20, finding many had lived in the U.S. for a decade or more and that nearly 40% had U.S.-born children; car washes were frequent enforcement sites, including a Rosemead action on Thursday.
  • Similar enforcement continues elsewhere, with nightly arrests reported in Washington, D.C., since Aug. 7 and DHS touting 4,500 arrests in Georgia from Jan. 21 to July 31, a sharp increase over the prior period.
