DHS Says FY2025 Southwest Border Apprehensions Hit Lowest Level Since 1970

Officials credit stricter enforcement—such as asylum limits, troop deployments, interior raids—for the sharp decline.

Overview

  • CBP reported 237,565 Border Patrol apprehensions in fiscal year 2025, the fewest since 1970 and 87% below the average of the previous four years.
  • Preliminary DHS data show 172,026 apprehensions occurred in the first 111 days of the fiscal year under President Biden, with 65,539 recorded under President Trump thereafter.
  • Monthly totals reached new lows over the summer, with about 4,600 in July, 6,300 in August and roughly 8,400 in September.
  • DHS said Border Patrol released zero migrants into the U.S. interior for a fifth straight month in September, compared with 9,144 releases in September 2024.
  • DHS data provided to media indicate more than 493,000 deportations so far in 2025, ICE on track for about 600,000 by year-end, and roughly 1.6 million additional voluntary departures.
