Overview

  • DHS said the McCook Work Ethic Camp will be converted to hold up to 280 people in ICE custody under a state–federal agreement.
  • Nebraska will operate the facility while federal funds cover costs, according to corrections director Rob Jeffreys.
  • About 186 current inmates will be relocated over 45 to 60 days to clear the site, which officials say is already accredited for secure housing.
  • Gov. Jim Pillen committed roughly 20 National Guard soldiers for administrative and logistical support and authorized State Patrol cooperation with ICE under a 287(g)-style arrangement.
  • The move extends a federally financed expansion that includes facilities like “Alligator Alcatraz” and “Speedway Slammer,” drawing lawsuits and local criticism, including transparency complaints from state Sen. Megan Hunt.
