DHS Marks 5,000 Arrests in Los Angeles as White House Plans Raids in More Sanctuary Cities

ICE moves to expand operations to other sanctuary cities, with accelerated hiring and training backed by fresh funding.

Overview

  • DHS identified the 5,000th arrestee as Gustavo Garcia-Miranda, a Mexican national and convicted drug trafficker detained for illegal reentry.
  • Border czar Tom Homan said operations will ramp up in Los Angeles and target New York, Portland, Seattle and Chicago, where a naval base near the city is under consideration as a hub.
  • To meet the surge, FLETC is postponing most non-ICE training through year-end while ICE accelerates hiring 10,000 ERO officers and 1,000 HSI agents, shortens academy time and equips new units.
  • ICE has deported nearly 200,000 people since January and total removals across DHS approach 350,000, though daily interior arrests reportedly trail a 3,000-a-day goal.
  • Court orders in Southern California restrict roving and appearance-based stops, and the Mexican Consulate’s 641 detainee interviews since June highlight disputes over arrest counts and who is being detained.
