DHS Keeps Pokémon-Themed Deportation Video Online as Pokémon Company Denounces Unauthorized Use

The episode highlights the agency’s recurring use of popular media without clear authorization.

Overview

  • DHS posted a Sept. 22 video on X titled "Gotta Catch 'Em All" that set ICE and Border Patrol arrest footage to the Pokémon theme and intercut it with animation from the franchise.
  • The Pokémon Company issued an official statement saying it was not involved in the video's creation or distribution and did not grant permission to use its intellectual property.
  • The post remains live, and a DHS spokesperson responded defiantly with a slogan riff, saying, "To arrest them is our real test. To deport them is our cause," according to the New York Post.
  • A separate DHS video featuring comedian Theo Von was taken down after he publicly objected to his clip being used without consent.
  • Outlets note prior DHS posts that borrowed copyrighted material, including an August video using a Jay-Z track that was removed after a complaint, while a former Pokémon chief legal officer predicted the company is unlikely to sue.
