DHS Accuses Duckworth Aide of Impersonating Lawyer to Access ICE Detainee

DHS set a Nov. 17 deadline for Duckworth to respond after citing surveillance footage, records checks, plus a Facebook post.

Overview

  • ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons alleged in a Nov. 12 letter that Duckworth staffer Edward York posed as an attorney on Oct. 29 to meet detainee Jose Ismeal Ayuzo Sandoval at an ICE field office in St. Louis.
  • The letter says York obtained the detainee’s signature on a G-28 authorization, then four days later a Collinsville firm filed an electronic G-28 lacking the detainee’s signature, which ICE suggested could indicate misrepresentation.
  • ICE reported it could not verify York as a licensed attorney and raised the possibility he worked with the Suarez Law Office to cover the alleged misrepresentation.
  • DHS released surveillance imagery it says shows York at the facility and noted a local Democratic group’s Facebook post describing a staffer arriving with documents and a release order, with the post also stating the Illinois governor’s office was heavily involved.
  • Lyons asked Duckworth to explain York’s employment status, whether he lied on federal forms, and whether other staff knew of his actions, with no public comment yet from the senator’s office.
