Dhaka Tightens Security Before Televised Hasina Verdict

Police have authorized live fire on arsonists ahead of a televised ruling that could hand Sheikh Hasina a death sentence.

Overview

  • Several crude bomb blasts and arson attacks were reported across Dhaka on Sunday with no casualties confirmed, extending a week of unrest.
  • Dhaka Metropolitan Police instructed officers to shoot those setting fires or hurling crude bombs with intent to kill, as Border Guards, Rapid Action Battalion teams and checkpoints were deployed in the capital and key districts.
  • Prosecutors in the International Crimes Tribunal case sought the death penalty, with approved portions of Monday’s verdict to be aired on state-run BTV and streamed on the tribunal’s Facebook page; Hasina can only appeal if she surrenders or is arrested within 30 days.
  • From exile in New Delhi, Hasina denies the charges, condemned the tribunal as a “kangaroo court,” and in an audio message urged supporters to pursue protest despite a ban on Awami League activity and a nationwide shutdown call.
  • Sajeeb Wazed warned Awami League supporters would block February’s election if the party’s ban stands, as authorities cite arrests over sabotage and a UN estimate of up to 1,400 deaths in 2024 underpins the prosecution narrative.
