- Dhaka police began running the camera-linked AI system in April and say it has already led to prosecutions and visible changes in driver behaviour.
- The software scans live roadside camera feeds to detect offences such as running red lights, illegal parking and lane violations, then sends automated notifications and fines after human operators verify incidents.
- Police report the system recorded nearly 800 flagged violations in a single day and has prosecuted about 300 vehicles so far while issuing warnings to less serious offenders.
- Officials acknowledge limits: number plates that are blurred or too small often cannot be read, the system does not yet cover the whole city, and pedal rickshaws remain outside automated enforcement.
- Longer-term success will depend on technical fixes to plate recognition, expansion of camera coverage, consistent enforcement practices and policy decisions on how to regulate non-motorized vehicles.
