Overview

  • The open day spanned 50 stations from Borkum to Ueckermünde on Germany’s North and Baltic Seas.
  • Demonstrations featured helicopter hoists, deck-to-water rescue simulations and historic lifeboat presentations.
  • In Neuharlingersiel, a scheduled demo was halted to tow a disabled sailboat off Spiekeroog at risk of grounding.
  • Rescue teams also towed a maneuver-impaired vessel in Sassnitz and recovered a missing four-year-old boy at Travemünde.
  • Founded in 1865, the donation-funded DGzRS has rescued over 87,000 people and is marking its 160th anniversary with plans to introduce new all-plastic vessels.
