DGzRS Battles Yacht Fire Off Travemünde a Day After Saving Two Kiters Near Fehmarnsund

Nearby vessels kept clear due to reported gas cylinders and batteries on the burning yacht.

Overview

  • A mayday shortly after 14:00 reported a solo skipper’s yacht ablaze about 1.6 nautical miles off the Travemünder Molenkopf, and he evacuated into a life raft before a passing motorboat picked him up.
  • DGzRS units ERICH KOSCHUBS, the training boat CHRISTOPH LANGNER and the rescue cruiser FELIX SAND responded, with FELIX SAND using its firefighting system to suppress the flames.
  • The skipper was transferred to shore and treated for suspected smoke inhalation, and the burned yacht was towed to Travemünde’s Ostpreußenkai for handover to local firefighters.
  • MRCC Bremen warned nearby traffic to maintain distance after the rescued skipper reported gas bottles and batteries on board.
  • The previous evening, DGzRS boats Helene and Romy Frank recovered two exhausted kitesurfers about 500 meters west of the Fehmarnsundbrücke after a sudden lull, returned them to Burgstaaken without medical treatment, and confirmed a third companion had reached shore on his own after tips from a motorist and a police patrol on the bridge.
