DGT Launches End-of-Summer Return Operation for Aug. 29–31, Forecasting Five Million Trips

Traffic authorities will deploy expanded enforcement to manage peak return flows.

Overview

  • Spain’s final summer traffic phase will run from Friday, Aug. 29 at 15:00 to Sunday, Aug. 31 at 24:00, with the most critical hours forecast for Friday 16:00–22:00, Saturday 09:00–13:00 and Sunday 16:00–23:00.
  • The DGT expects about 5,060,000 long-distance movements on roads under its management as holidaymakers return from coastal and second-residence areas to major cities.
  • Resources include Guardia Civil traffic agents, traffic-management centres, maintenance and emergency staff, and fixed and mobile radars, helicopters, drones, cameras and unmarked vans and motorcycles.
  • Tactical measures will add reversible or additional lanes, pause roadworks, enable alternative routes and restrict hazardous-goods vehicles, special transports and certain trucks in specified stretches and hours.
  • The national forecast excludes Catalonia, the Basque Country and Navarra; in Murcia, authorities project about 212,500 trips and advise avoiding Friday 13:00–21:00 and Sunday 10:00–14:00 and 16:00–21:00.
