DGT Fines Hit Record as AP-9 Average-Speed Radar Is Corrected to Start Ticketing Sept. 5

Mobile radars caught over one million drivers in 2024, lifting traffic fine revenue to €540 million.

  • An AEA report counts 5,413,507 traffic penalties in 2024 with €539,985,552 collected, led by 3,440,530 speeding cases.
  • Mobile speed controls cited 1,075,272 drivers in 2024, up 22.3%, while fixed-radar detections fell 2.5% to 2.36 million.
  • The DGT confirmed the AP-9 Candeán–Puxeiros average-speed system was miscalibrated at 100 km/h during its warning phase; it will fine from 120 km/h starting Friday, Sept. 5.
  • Andalusia registered the most fines in absolute terms, Madrid had the highest density of citations, and a single M-40 radar (km 20.2) issued 74,873 notices.
  • Madrid’s city hall took in over €211 million in 2024 fines, largely from Low Emission Zone penalties, as consumer group Facua won the annulment of a wrongly issued ZBE ticket.
