DGHS Details Costs and Protocol in Kessler Twins’ Assisted Deaths

The German association says a €6,000 joint fee covers medical and legal support within a months-long process requiring registration and multiple interviews.

Overview

  • Alice and Ellen Kessler, both 89, died by assisted suicide on 17 November at their home in Grünwald near Munich.
  • DGHS spokesperson Wega Wetzel said the fee is €4,000 per individual or €6,000 for two who undergo the procedure together.
  • According to DGHS, a physician prepares a lethal anesthetic infusion, a clinician places the needle, the patient activates the device, and police are notified once death is confirmed.
  • The sisters began the process more than a year ago, consistent with DGHS rules that include at least six months of membership and interviews with medical and legal staff.
  • DGHS reports accompanying over 600 assisted deaths in the past year, as the German Bishops’ Conference reiterates ethical objections and urges stronger palliative and psychological care.
