DGCA Puts Army Officer on No-Fly List for Five Years After Assault on SpiceJet Staff

The five-year prohibition follows a CAR-mandated panel’s finding of Level 3 unruly conduct in the July 26 Srinagar incident.

Overview

  • An internal committee comprising two retired judges and an airline representative declared the passenger unruly and recommended a five-year ban under Civil Aviation Requirements.
  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has placed the officer on the national no-fly list, and SpiceJet has barred him from all its domestic and international flights for five years.
  • The dispute began over excess cabin baggage of 16 kg against a 7 kg limit, after which the passenger forced entry into the aerobridge, was escorted back by CISF, and allegedly assaulted four staffers.
  • SpiceJet reported injuries including a spinal fracture and serious jaw trauma, secured CCTV footage, and handed it to police as video of the altercation circulated widely.
  • Police lodged an FIR under Section 115 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and a cross-FIR followed the officer’s counter-complaint, the Indian Army said it is cooperating with the probe, and the accused can appeal the CAR decision within 60 days.
