DGCA Proposes Raising Aircraft Import Ages to 20 Years for Jets, 25 for Unpressurised Types

Stakeholders can comment until September 19 on a draft that swaps short‑term fleet flexibility for stricter safety checks.

Overview

  • The draft Civil Aviation Requirement would lift import caps from 18 to 20 years for pressurised aircraft and from 20 to 25 years for unpressurised aircraft, subject to conditions.
  • Pressurised aircraft would be eligible only if they have not exceeded 20 years of age or 65% of their design pressurisation‑cycle life, whichever occurs first.
  • Aircraft older than 18 years must have flown at least 100 hours in the past six months or, alternatively, have completed major maintenance with a satisfactory test flight within six months.
  • Unpressurised aircraft would be approved case by case, must have flown 50 hours in the prior six months, and would not be cleared if older than 25 years.
  • Operators importing older aircraft must bring manufacturer‑recommended critical spares, with the proposal framed as a response to delivery delays and large order books exceeding 1,400 jets.
