DGCA Probes Uncommanded RAT Deployment on Air India 787 as Jet Is Cleared After Checks

India’s pilots’ union is pressing for full electrical-system inspections across 787s after an approach to Birmingham where monitoring indicated a possible BPCU fault.

Overview

  • Air India flight AI117 from Amritsar to Birmingham reported Ram Air Turbine deployment on final approach at roughly 400–500 feet, yet landed safely with electrical and hydraulic parameters normal.
  • The Dreamliner (VT-ANO) was grounded and its Birmingham–Delhi return (AI114) was cancelled, with passengers re-accommodated, the airline said.
  • DGCA assigned a detailed investigation and said Boeing-recommended maintenance actions for uncommanded RAT deployment were completed with no discrepancies, adding the aircraft is being released for service.
  • Boeing issued a Fleet Team Digest summarizing previous similar cases, according to the regulator, as part of operator guidance following the event.
  • The Federation of Indian Pilots urged comprehensive checks of 787 electrical systems in India, citing Aircraft Health Monitoring data indicating a possible Bus Power Control Unit fault and referencing ongoing scrutiny after the June 12 AI171 crash under AAIB probe.
