DGCA Fines IndiGo ₹22.20 Crore Over December Flight Collapse, Orders ₹50 Crore Bank Guarantee

A DGCA probe blamed over‑optimised scheduling with weak oversight for the three‑day collapse.

Overview

  • The total includes ₹1.80 crore in one‑time CAR penalties plus ₹20.40 crore for 68 days of alleged non‑compliance from December 5 to February 10.
  • The regulator cautioned CEO Pieter Elbers, warned COO Isidre Porqueras, and directed OCC senior vice president Jason Herter be relieved of operational roles and barred from accountable posts.
  • IndiGo must furnish a ₹50 crore bank guarantee under the ISRAS framework, to be released in phases against DGCA‑verified reforms across leadership, manpower and rostering, digital systems, and board oversight.
  • Between December 3 and 5, 2,507 flights were cancelled and 1,852 delayed, affecting over three lakh passengers nationwide.
  • DGCA said refunds for the December 3–5 cancellations have been processed, with eligible flyers entitled to statutory compensation plus ₹10,000 in 'Gesture of Care' vouchers.
