Overview
- The Department for Transport has advised councils to use existing powers to offer Blue Badge concessions to individuals with temporary disabilities.
- Automatic eligibility now covers those receiving higher rate mobility DLA, scoring eight or more on PIP moving-around tests, registered blind individuals, War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement recipients and certain Armed Forces Compensation Scheme awardees.
- Local councils will assess other applicants who meet health or disability criteria, such as inability to walk unaided, life-limiting illnesses or severe non-visible conditions, through a standard evaluation process.
- Applicants must provide proof of identity and address, a recent photograph, national insurance number if available, and supporting benefit letters or medical documentation.
- Fees differ across the UK, with badges costing up to £10 in England, £20 in Scotland and free in Wales, and each badge remains valid for up to three years.
