DFL Approves Stadium Stoppage-Time Display From 2026, Updates U23 Loan Quota Rule

The decisions passed unanimously with a stated goal of greater in-stadium clarity.

Overview

  • From January 1, 2026, Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga scoreboards will show the actually played added time on a separate display.
  • Regular time will still stop at 45:00 and 90:00, with the running stoppage time shown on scoreboards or video walls.
  • Where systems allow, venues may also show the amount of extra time set by the referee, and DFB Schiri GmbH is said to agree with the plan.
  • The DFL also changed roster rules so up to two German-licensed players who turn at most 23 this season and are on loan to a German club at Regionalliga level or higher can count toward the minimum of twelve German-licensed players.
  • DerWesten reports the first match using the new display will be Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Borussia Dortmund on January 9, 2026, at 20:30.
