DfE Announces Optional GCSE Results App Nationwide From Summer 2026

The government says the optional app will cut enrolment admin, yielding savings of up to £30 million a year.

Overview

  • Year 11 students will still collect grades in person on results day, with results then appearing in the Education Record app later that morning, targeted for 11 a.m. where used.
  • Participation is voluntary for schools this year after limited pilot uptake in Greater Manchester and the West Midlands, where 29 of 487 invited settings took part involving about 4,000 pupils.
  • If a school opts in, the Department for Education populates records and schools link a pupil’s data to their phone, enabling QR-code sharing at college enrolment.
  • The app includes fields to support transitions such as SEND status, English and maths continuation requirements, and free school meals eligibility.
  • Work is underway to connect the service to the GOV.UK Wallet with potential expansion to post‑16 qualifications, as sector leaders welcome the convenience but note wider funding pressures.
