Overview

  • The DFB working group, which met Wednesday, endorsed cutting the Regionalliga from five to four divisions so every fourth-tier champion moves straight up to the 3. Liga.
  • The Compass model would field 80 instead of 90 teams and use software each season to group clubs by shortest travel, a plan backed by the Aufstiegsreform 2025 initiative of about 70 teams.
  • The Regions model would merge the current Nord, Nordost, and Bayern into two leagues while leaving West and Südwest intact, a move NOFV chief Hermann Winkler called instinctless and eastern clubs labeled a bad joke.
  • The next steps are club opinion surveys and then a vote by the presidents of state and regional FAs, with a qualification season planned for 2027/28 and a possible launch in 2028/29.
