DFB Honors Mats Hummels With Official Farewell Before World Cup Qualifier in Cologne

UEFA protocols had delayed a DFB ceremony, prompting the federation to stage the tribute at its home qualifier.

Overview

  • DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and sporting director Rudi Völler presented Hummels with a framed collage inscribed “Mr. Außenrist,” as stadium screens read “Danke, Mats.”
  • The 36-year-old waved to sustained applause, and a South Stand choreography displayed a banner reading “Meisterlich Ausgezeichnet Tatkräftig Stark.”
  • Speaking to RTL, Hummels called the moment a “schöner Abschluss” after his open-ended non-selection in 2024 and said he hoped for redemption following Thursday’s 0:2 in Slovakia.
  • Hummels, a 2014 World Cup winner, finished with 78 caps and five goals for Germany, making his last international appearance on November 21, 2023 in Vienna.
  • He retired from club football with AS Roma in May and was honored by Borussia Dortmund in August, and BILD reported that his son Ludwig was invited to the DFB tribute.
