DFB Hands Clubs About €12 Million in 2024/25 Sanctions as Cologne Tops List

A surge in pyrotechnic incidents has intensified calls from fans and executives to rethink collective penalties.

Overview

  • Fifty-six clubs across the top three tiers were fined a little over €12 million in 2024/25, roughly matching the previous season’s total.
  • 1. FC Köln paid the most at €924,355, Eintracht Frankfurt led the Bundesliga with €764,600, and Hamburger SV ranked third overall with €623,555.
  • Dynamo Dresden incurred €428,460 to lead the 3. Liga, where total penalties rose to about €2.24 million as fines for Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs fell by more than €1 million.
  • Police data show pyrotechnic incidents increased by 73% year over year, fueling criticism from groups like Unsere Kurve and Schalke CEO Matthias Tillmann that collective fines are ineffective.
  • Because clubs may allocate parts of penalties to prevention, only about €8 million reached the DFB, which then forwarded roughly €6 million to football foundations.
