Overview
- Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather administered the oath in Jammu to BJP’s Devyani Rana and PDP’s Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi on November 21.
- Rana won the Nagrota bypoll over JKNPP’s Harsh Dev Singh by more than 21,000 votes after the seat fell vacant following the October 2024 death of MLA Devender Singh Rana.
- Mehdi captured Budgam by over 4,400 votes against NC’s Aga Syed Mehmood after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah vacated the seat to retain Ganderbal.
- The 90-member Assembly now counts NC 41, BJP 29, Congress 6, PDP 4, CPI(M) 1, Peoples Conference 1, AIP 1, AAP 1, and six Independents, five of whom have joined the NC.
- Congress maintains outside support to the Omar Abdullah-led government despite friction stemming from October’s Rajya Sabha polls that produced three NC seats and one for the BJP.
