Developing Cyclone Off Brazil’s Southeast Triggers Severe Rains and High-Risk Alerts

Meteorological agencies warn of downpours and gale-force gusts today as the oceanic system intensifies instability before starting to move offshore by Wednesday.

Overview

  • Inmet issued widespread warnings, including storm danger for 458 municipalities in Minas Gerais and additional alerts for the São Paulo coast that cite up to 100 mm of rain in a day, winds near 100 km/h and possible hail.
  • Forecasters say the low forming between the São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro coasts will fuel persistent rain and stronger coastal winds through Tuesday, with a gradual weakening expected as it shifts to the open sea.
  • Rio de Janeiro entered stage 2 on Monday night after heavy showers caused flooding in zones Norte, Oeste and Sudoeste, and Alerta Rio maintained guidance for more moderate to heavy cells with lightning and gusts.
  • A sudden squall in Rio Verde (GO) brought about 80 mm of rain in roughly 20 minutes and gusts up to 91.8 km/h, toppling structures, suspending care in 14 health units and knocking out the Samu 192 line.
  • In Santa Catarina, Luiz Alves recorded 180.2 mm in 24 hours with widespread flooding, school suspensions and sheltering, while recent storms also left one person dead in Hortolândia (SP) and more than 150 injured after hail in Erechim (RS).
