Developer Unlocks Full Control of Pixel 11 Pro’s HiLight LED

A third-party app shows the LED can run per-app colors, patterns and presets and may push Google to open official access.

Overview

  • A developer released HiLight Studio that gives Pixel 11 Pro owners granular control of the rear HiLight LED, enabling per-app colors, animated patterns and importable presets.
  • The app was posted to GitHub and first surfaced on Thursday, Aug. 20, showing day-one proof that the hardware can do far more than Google shipped it to do.
  • Google’s official HiLight at launch only supports Gemini face-down feedback and five contact colors for calls, which the app expands into broad notification uses.
  • HiLight Studio avoids rooting by using shell-level permissions but requires sideloading from GitHub and extra steps such as Shizuku or ADB and reauthorization after each reboot, creating security and usability friction.
  • The release highlights a recurring Android pattern where independent developers extend tightly limited manufacturer features and could pressure Google to provide an official API or simpler support in future updates.
