Overview
- Zyyo has reinstalled drywall over the 1985 mural at 600 East Main Street, leaving a six-inch air gap to accommodate a gym tenant
- The mural was uncovered in September 2022 by architect Moseley Putney and has since been documented by the David Wojnarowicz Foundation, PPOW and the Speed Museum
- The artist’s estate and PPOW proposed in situ conservation or clear protective coverings to allow public viewing but proposals were rejected
- Jamie Campisano of Zyyo maintains that the privately leased space and tenant requirements absolve the owner of any display obligation
- VARA grants moral rights to artists, but conflicting case law on mural concealment leaves the work’s legal protection unresolved
