Overview
- Deutsche Regas announced on Thursday that it signed a partnership in Tokyo with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines to station a second floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at the Mukran terminal.
- The company says the additional ship will restore the terminal’s approved regasification capacity to as much as 13.5 billion cubic meters a year and that the MOL contract runs through 2043 for a sum described as several hundred million dollars.
- Mukran is the only privately financed LNG terminal in Germany and previously ran two FSRUs in 2024, but a government-chartered ship was returned in 2025 after Deutsche Regas criticized pricing by the state operator Deutsche Energy Terminal.
- Federal officials have rejected Deutsche Regas’s claims of distorted competition, and the move comes while European gas prices have risen toward €100/MWh and German storage levels are about 61 percent full.
- Restoring Mukran’s full capacity could increase import flexibility for households and industry this winter and shift competitive dynamics with state-run North Sea terminals, so markets and regulators will be watching contract delivery, vessel arrival, and how the extra volumes affect prices and storage fills.
