Deutsche Post Reshapes Letter Services to Take Effect January 1, 2027

The company says new size limits and product cuts aim to speed machine sorting and align with the World Postal Treaty while sending thicker items into parcel services could raise costs for private senders.

Overview

  • Deutsche Post announced in August 2026 that it will change its national and international letter portfolio, with the rules coming into force on 1 January 2027.
  • Under the reform the Großbrief’s height rises to 3 cm and weight to 1 kg, while the Maxibrief gains larger length and width and a weight limit of 2 kg but is capped at 3 cm height.
  • The current Maxibrief International is being discontinued and replaced by a Midibrief International that allows at most 2 cm height and up to 500 g, tightening cross‑border limits set by the World Postal Treaty.
  • Standardbrief and Kompaktbrief remain unchanged, but any item thicker than 3 cm must be sent as a DHL Päckchen or Paket, a shift that will push many private sellers toward parcel pricing.
  • Deutsche Post says the changes are meant to improve automated processing, yet new postage rates have not been published and senders face possible higher costs and more returned international items if they exceed the new limits.
