Overview
- Deutsche Post announced on Tuesday that it has formally proposed new 2027–2028 tariffs, raising the standard letter price by €0.20 to €1.15 and calling the move the largest single increase in its history.
- The company also proposed higher rates for other letter classes, with the Kompaktbrief to €1.25, the Großbrief to €2.35 and the Maxibrief to €5.00 for the two-year period.
- Deutsche Post justifies the proposal by citing multi-year declines in mail volumes, rising personnel, energy and materials costs, and about €1 billion in annual investments in the post-and-parcel network.
- The plan must be approved by the Bundesnetzagentur, which recently signaled an overall revenue allowance of roughly 20.35% for letters in 2027–2028 and left it to the company to allocate increases across products.
- Consumers and businesses will face higher mailing costs and may need top-up stamps because old 95-cent stamps remain valid, political figures have expressed conditional understanding, and parcel prices for private customers are still unspecified.
